This year the readers of Conde Nast Traveller, a leading travel magazine, voted Greece as their favourite nation. Italy was in second place, followed by the United States and South Africa. The world loves Greece. And with good reason. Ancient culture. Islands. The food. And the Greeks …

This crisis. Yes, it’s an economic crisis. But it’s become a social crisis. A crisis of confidence. A future crisis. We need to pick ourselves up. We need to realise who we are, where we come from and where we’re capable of going. We need to create our future.

We need to get rid of this notion that somehow, we’re not to blame. And we need to get rid of this hope that someone will save the situation. Because that someone is ourselves. As Barack Obama once said, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”

They say that we operate in two distinct ways, each using a different part of the brain. There’s what they call the left brain. The part of the brain that deals with rational thought, with data, with process, precision and efficiency. Hard power, the pragmatic side of the brain. And then there’s the right brain. Imagination. Creativity. Passion. Compassion. Soft power, the visionary side of the brain.

We live in a left brain world.

But the world needs right brain too.

And here is our value as Greeks.

We’ll never be good Germans.

But we must become exceptional Greeks. And we’ll do this by tapping into our true DNA.

Think about it…

The love of life.

The love of liberty that gave rise to democracy. The love of beauty that gave rise to fine art. The love of peace that gave rise to Olympism. The love of knowledge that gave rise to science. The love of discovery that gave rise to philosophy. The love of wellbeing at the heart of the Mediterranean diet. The love of generosity that gives rise to hospitality. If we lose this love we lose life, we lose ourselves. Because this is what makes us who we are. It’s how we wake up each morning. With the love of life.

The love of life.

This is Greek knowhow. And when we utilize this knowhow we transform it into creative enterprise to be valued by the world. This is how we will reignite our economy. And give Greece a meaningful role in the world. By doing things that Greeks excel at. By creating sustainable competitive advantage based on unique Greek knowhow.

The knowhow of life.

The love of life.

Find what you personally excel at. What you truly love doing. Because that’s when work ceases to be work. That’s when work becomes passion. That’s when you can approach what you do with enthusiasm.

Enthusiasm. What a beautiful word. At its root is “en theos” - the god inside. Find it. And express it in everything you do.

There’s never been a better time to be Greek.

Because it’s this love of life that the world loves most about Greeks.
