The Aegean Sea is the most important of the Mediterranean Sea, and perhaps the entire world. This is due to its geographical location, the configuration of the coast and the many islands, many of which are of strategic importance. It became instrument for the development of the Greek fleet and birthplace of Hellenic Culture. According to Greek mythology, the name derives from Aegeus, king of Athens and father of Theseus, who fell and drowned in the waters of the sea from the temple of Poseidon at Sounion.
